This is a reduced price collection of four different decks I designed and produced - the Identity Deck, The Elder Deck, Neuricle and the Peacocks. Each of them have things I would do differently, minor issues that would be easy to fix now that I've got more experience doing these things now - and yet, they each have something unique and fascinating to offer.
Identity Deck
Identity Deck was a collaboration with my dudes Luke Hennessy and John Watson - it is a very rich and dense deck that is designed specifically for a kind of personality focussed mentalism. The tricks it has baked into it are all framed around understanding aspects of how a person thinks, as much as it is what they are thinking. To paraphrase Howard Stark, I was limited by the technology of the time. It needed word markings to be complete and not to put too fine a point on it, I didn't know how to do that when I was making this deck. It is still a very complete product, and whenever I do perform with it now I am kind of pleasantly surprised to be reminded quite how strong it is. It's something unique, that's it's strength, but it's also what made it a hard sell. Misfit.
Elder Deck
This project was really the brainchild of John Watson, and it reflects his fascination with readings and runes and, like I think some of my favourite products in the magic world, it came about because it was something that JW himself wanted for performance. I think that’s an interesting frame for a trick - it kind of guarantees a certain level of work because if you want a trick for yourself, you want it to be GOOD! So JW worked a lot on the concept and development of the Elder Deck and I did a bit of the technical bs getting it ready for production and tidying up loose ends etc. I think it’s a really cool product, and I think even if you just do 100% normal card magic with it, not readings, not even really using the runes, it gives an interesting visual flair to what you are doing and gives you the opportunity to work your way round to something more in depth. Didn’t sell loads but it’s a cool piece. For sure misfit.
Neuricle
So, the Neuricle is what I called a ‘Hyper Marked’ deck, because it’s a kind of visual experiment into how much you can realistically usably mark on a deck of cards. DeLand showed you could mark *everything* but also that that can be unwieldy in terms of actual use in performance. I started wondering if there was a way to do it that moved around some of the compromises, only fed information that might realistically be of interest to a performer, and does it in a way that is actually understandable and immediate to use. Such a weird niche thing, it was part of a kickstarter for a trick that use an NFC wristband as a weird fake neural interface and it kind of just did this one routine. Ultra ultra niche of a niche. I love it and actually using it, especially for the spelling stuff, is really fun and you can get into it with the punters because it’s so fast to do, even if they have a rough idea of what you are doing, it is wild how fast you can do it. Absolute misfit.
Peacocks
This was a deck of cards I produced with my wonderful wife Rocsana, which obviously was great fun and we’re both very proud of. I hand drew and painted almost all of it, and the design has lots of little easter eggs, including the motto, Trăiește ca un păun, which means Live Like A Peacock in Romanian. I think people were expecting a marked deck though at the time, not like I’ve pigeonholed myself, lol, so just an elegant regular deck was a bit of an experiment at the time. If nothing else it has some artwork in it that I was quite proud of. Defo misfit.
